The problem
Paints and coatings protect surfaces and make life more colorful. They frequently contain siloxanes, which ensure that the products spread evenly over a surface and repel water and dirt after curing. They also improve weather and UV resistance. Paints and coatings containing siloxanes can also contain small amounts of impurities that the European Union classifies as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)—that is, substances with particularly worrying properties.
The solution
Evonik manufactures a wide range of siloxane-based additives. In 95 percent of these products, the SVHC content is less than 0.1 percent, making them suitable for use in paints and coatings with Ecolabel certification. Careful selection of raw materials and optimized manufacturing processes have led to significant reductions in contamination by problematic siloxanes.
