Adhesives are designed to hold – but ideally, they should also be removable when needed, as this is the only way to reuse the bonded parts. Evonik has a solution for this.

In modern manufacturing, adhesives are essential: they enable efficient assembly, the joining of different materials, and lightweight construction. The challenge arises when it comes to repairing or recycling bonded components. Evonik is working on an innovative “Debonding on Demand” concept to provide a solution. Thanks to this technology, materials joined with polyurethane-based adhesives can—if needed—be separated again at temperatures above 100 degrees, without any force or damage. This means products can be designed from the start to be disassemblable, in line with Design for Circularity. In the video, Evonik debonding expert Dr. Alexander Azzawi explains what this has to do with knitted sweaters and how the technology can be applied, for example, in EV batteries.
