The person

Engr. Mark Kennedy Bantugon developed a feel for the value of natural resources early on. “I grew up on a farm,” says the 27-year-old Filipino. “That’s how I came across plants and trees from which valuable raw materials can be extracted.” The native pili tree has shaped the young researcher’s path to this day. After earning a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Philippine State College of Aeronautics, Bantugon is currently finishing his master’s degree in materials science and engineering at Mapúa University. Here he pushed ahead with his invention Pili Seal and at the same time established his start-up Pili AdheSeal.

The vision

Bantugon uses resin residues from the pili tree that are a byproduct of the perfume industry. With its good adhesive properties, this waste forms the basis of a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and high-performance sealant and adhesive—for the aerospace industry, for example. The residues from Bantugon’s production can be converted into fertilizer. “This creates a cycle that makes the sealant and adhesive industry more sustainable and empowers local agriculture.” He is implementing his first project in cooperation with the Philippines’ Department of National Defense: “Now I want to see my invention grow beyond the country’s borders.”
