Researchers from the USA are transforming casein and whey proteins into a more sustainable plastic for additive manufacturing

Worldwide, around 116 million tons of dairy products are wasted or disposed of every year. Dr. John Obielodan and Dr. Joseph Wu from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville have developed an innovative solution to make these residual materials usable. Their patented process converts dairy waste into a biodegradable plastic for 3D printing. The basis is casein and whey proteins, which are extracted from spoiled milk and combined with polymers. Butanol first removes unwanted fat from the proteins to improve printability. The purified proteins are then mixed with conventional polymers.

Crucially, the formulation must be precisely balanced, because the mixing ratio largely determines mechanical characteristics such as strength, flexibility, and resistance to pressure. The result is a printable material with bio-based content as a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastics.
